Biomaa Ltd is a professional land refinement company established in 1994

We are offering cost effective and high quality contracting in earthworks, mixing of large quantity masses, contaminated land-area reclamation and stabilisation. Our growing company develops the methods and machinery according to client needs. We currently employ around 20 professionals.

Our base of operations is located at Nurmijärvi Finland. From here we manage operations all over the Baltic Sea Region. We also possess a Certification of Competence awarded to us by the Finnish Construction Quality Association (RALA).

Mass stabilisation

There are many soft land areas and construction on these has traditionally required large scale mass exchanges. The exchange of land masses can be replaced by a stabilisation process that enables remarkable savings in costs. Stabilisation is used to make unused, weakly carrying land areas into usable land areas, by saving more valuable natural resources.

In the mass stabilization method, a binding agent is mixed with soft clay, sludge or peat with a special mixer that is attached to the excavator. Mixing is performed vertically and horizontally, which creates an evenly firmed, homogeneous plated area, which can be used for building ground structures. By feeding the binder into the ground the pressure feeders are needed. Binding agent content is normally 50-150 kg/m3.

The stabilization of organic soils like organic clay, silt and peat is a relatively new technology.  One of the first projects was realized on a peat area in the year 1993 in Finland. Since beginning Biomaa has executed successfully more than 50 stabilisation projects, including road structures, railway embankments, housing areas, pipeline embankments, harbor structures, parking fields etc.

Process/station stabilisation

Contaminated sediments in harbours and on sea routes have become a problem during the past few years. In Europe, around 200 million m3 of masses are dredged annually, mostly contaminated with different chemical pollutants. It is not easy to find an economically and environmentally sound solution for handling contaminated dredging masses. Especially the tight limits set for TBT (tributyltin) toxicity and other pollutants add to the volume of masses to be handled substantially. Using the seabed as a landfill for these masses is no longer an alternative. Contaminated sediments are mostly classified as problem waste and therefore the disposal is closely reglemented, expensive and problematic.

Biomaa Ltd has developed a stabilisation based process in order to utilise the above mentioned problematic masses for example construction of harbour area base structures. We call this process stabilisation. This process is especially suitable for projects in where the filling areas are more than 5 metres deep.
